Living Independently With Multiple Sclerosis – Nail Clipper

Man with Multiple Sclerosis

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has resources available to help people living with MS “live their best life” through their Navigator Program. Because nail care qualifies as a daily living activity, support receiving a ClipDifferent automatic nail clipper is an option. They are welcoming and a valuable asset navigating this journey.

“Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.” National MS Society

As the disease progresses, the flow of information influences one’s independence in a variety of ways during the course of a routine day: Eating, bathing, getting dressed, toileting, transferring or moving about freely. Active daily living (ADL) aids to assist and is dependent on each person’s unique circumstances. Trimming fingernails is one of those routine activities that change with time. When assistive devices help the daily living, people gain independence and comfort.

“I’ve won the war, it’s these little day-to-day battles we need to deal with” -Rick Ebner

ClipDifferent gives independence to the nail care routine. The line of nail clippers, Professional and Junior, automatically trim nails to the desired length without the need to hold or squeeze any traditional clipper. The device can rest on the table or lap while the trimming mechanism operates. The safety nail-slot allows only the nail to be inserted so users are safe. The nail drawer collects the clippings and the rechargeable battery lasts months between charges so the device needs minimal effort to maintain.

MS Navigator Program
“When individuals are overwhelmed with financial, emotional, physical and other MS-related challenges and thus unable to navigate resources and options independently, the MS Navigator will offer goal-oriented support and connection to services and resources, and will work with the individual or loved one toward finding a sustainable solution in meeting basic living requirements for housing, food, and access to healthcare through connecting with the community and social service agencies.”

These resources can be accessed online, via e-mail at ContactUsNMSS@nmss.org or by calling 1-800-344-4867.

“The automatic nail clippers by ClipDifferent give independence.”

Most people think of their Multiple Sclerosis in terms of “mild,” “moderate,” or “severe” symptoms. There is also the Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS.) Like other daily living aids, ClipDifferent recommends being introduced to your nail clipper when symptoms first appear so nail care ease can be one less concern during the MS journey.

Rick Ebner was a college football player and an avid athlete. When the father of four was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 32, he was devastated that the athletic lifestyle that once defined him would deteriorate. He continues to live a full and active life filled with laughter, exercise, and service. In 2011, the MS Birdie Bash Gala started with the goal “Helping Those in Need.” They have raised more than $250,000 to help Rick and others off-set some of the costs associated with equipment, medicine, therapy and doctor visits needed to live more independently.
