Something So Simple

Shelly’s Story and Making a Difference

Shelly R. shares her story with the ClipDifferent community on how the ClipDifferent Pro made a positive difference in her life, and put her mind at ease about independence. Heart-warming and touching stories like these are one of the many reasons why the Pro and Pro Junior were created.

Shelly’s Diagnosis

In 2006 Shelly was diagnosed with vascular brain tumors, called cavernous angiomas. She sustained nerve damage when a brainstem tumor had to be surgically removed causing right-sided paralysis known as hemiplegia. As a result of this nerve damage, Shelly had to relearn how to perform daily tasks using only her left side–usually with the assistance of a tool and doing things in an entirely new way. In this short video clip, Shelly explains in her own words what those early days were like.

Learning to Accept Help

One part of having a disability is understanding and learning to sometimes ask for help. For some people, having to ask for help, may be frustrating and uncomfortable.

More than 1 million adults in the U.S. experience a brain injury annually. Anxiety, depression and panic are just some of the mental health issues that can impact people who are experiencing new or lifelong disabilities. The last thing these individuals want is to feel like they are a burden to those around them. Shelly shares her personal experience in this clip.

Discovering ClipDifferent

Shelly first learned about ClipDifferent in 2018 during the Innovations for Independence – Assistive Technology event in Minnesota. She knew instantly she wanted the product.

Shortly after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shelly moved to Los Angeles, Ca. to expand her career as a disability advocate and activist. During the move, her nail trimmer was damaged. Shelly quickly panicked knowing that she couldn’t trim her fingernails. Her nails were growing too long and started to cause pain as the jagged edges would cut the palm of her right hand whenever she would grip anything or squeeze too tightly. In this video clip, Shelly talks more about this challenge.

A Sense of Freedom

After reaching out to ClipDifferent, Shelly received a new unit that allowed her to reclaim her independence, regardless of whether nail salons were closed or open. We worked with Shelly to ensure she received her ClipDifferent Pro shipment even in the midst of a global pandemic.

“I am reminded yet again that I am disabled when the world around me is set up in a way that I cannot care for myself,” Shelly reflected. “Tools like the ClipDifferent Pro set me free.”
